Studio portrait of 413496 Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Roydon Derwent Woods, 90 Squadron RAF. Before entering into service with the RAAF at age 26, on 12 August 1942, Flt Sgt Woods was a clerk living in Hornsby, New South Wales. He left Australia on 17 October 1942 and took part in a number of bombing raids with the Bomber Command 3 Group. Flt Sgt Woods was promoted to Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) and in 1945 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his courage, fortitude and devotion to duty. Flt Lt Woods survived the Second World War and was discharged on 14 December 1945.
