Description
Letters relating to the First World War service of 843 Battery Sergeant Major Norman Griffiths Ellsworth, 102nd Howitzer Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. The letters were written by Norman Ellsworth to his mother between 29 April 1914 to 27 December 1915. In the letters, Ellsworth comments on the voyage to Egypt, the Sydney-Emden battle and a collision between the HMAS Shropshire and the SS Ascanius. Whilst in Egypt, he described life at Mena Camp and comments adversely on the articles sent home by Bean, describing them as "a pack of deliberate falsehoods". Ellsworth's letters from Gallipoli describe the successful landing of his gun, the lossess suffered by the Australians and their fighting spirit.
