History / Summary

Awarded to Charles Thomas Peters who was born at Brunswick, Victoria in 1896. He was working as a dental mechanic when he enlisted in the AIF at Melbourne in July 1915 aged nineteen. Peters joined 29 Battalion and served with that unit until October 1918 when he transferred to 32 Battalion. He returned to Australia in March 1919. Charles Peters was awarded the Military Medal for an action which took place at Nauroy, France on 1 October 1918, during the 5th Australian Division’s advance on the Hindenburg Line below Bellicourt – one of the last Australian actions of the war. The recommendation for the Military Medal reads, ‘For gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on the SUGAR COMPANY at NAUROY on the 1st October 1918. His platoon COMMANDER was killed, and under extremely heavy shell and machine gun fire he re-organised the platoon with great skill and handled them throughout the fighting with determination. He showed great courage and soon had the complete confidence of the men under his command. His quick action and utter disregard for personal safety throughout was an inspiration to all.’
