Studio portrait of 294 Trooper (Tpr) Charles Doherty, 12th Light Horse Regiment, and an unidentified Australian soldier. A labourer prior to enlisting on 27 January 1915, Tpr Doherty embarked for overseas service on 25 August 1915. Tpr Doherty was promoted to Lance Corporal (L Cpl) on 30 March 1917. On 1 February 1918, L Cpl Doherty was selected to serve with Dunster Force, a special force established to organise local resistance to enemy advances in Mesopotamia and Persia. L Cpl Doherty was promoted to the rank of Sergeant (Sgt) on 8 February 1918. Sgt Doherty was discharged in August 1919.
