Description

Two prisoners of war digging the escape tunnel from the Stalag Luft III (Stammlager Luftwasse III) German prisoner of war camp in Sagan (Sagan bei Breslau), Germany (now part of Poland). The artist and other officers were held at this camp from September 1943 to January 1945. The prisoners planned their escape by digging tunnels, but of those who eventually got through and escaped about 50 were shot by the Gestapo after recapture.
