The tunnel was to come up in the woods beyond the guard box, Stalag Luft III
Description
Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany, showing buildings in the camp and the guard tower on a hill beyond. Stalag Luft III (Stammlager Luftwasse III) was a German prisoner of war camp in Sagan (Sagan bei Breslau), Germany (now part of Poland) where Comber and other officers were held from September 1943 to January 1945. The prisoners planned their escape by digging tunnels, but of those who eventually got through and escaped about 50 were shot by the Gestapo after recapture.
