Description
Three men constructing a monument in the British section of the cemetery at the German prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft III (Stammlager Luftwasse III) in Sagan (Sagan bei Breslau), Germany (now part of Poland). The artist and other officers were held prisoner there from September 1943 to January 1945. The prisoners planned their escape by digging a tunnel, but those who eventually got through tunnel "Dick" and left the prison were shot by the Germans. Altogether they built three tunnels: Tom, Dick and Harry; but all three failed.
