Description

A black and white drawing of the winter march from Stalag Luft III. For many of the Australian servicemen imprisoned in the Nazi POW camps, it was the most extreme winter they had ever been exposed to. The majority of POW deaths in Europe occurred during these death marches across Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia in the early months of 1945. Many of the POWs were already suffering from malnutrition, lice and other diseases, which were exacerbated by the bitterly cold conditions and the distances they were forced to march.
