Evacuation by motor ambulance, France 1914-1918
Description
Depicts a motor ambulance driving through rubble, evacuating the wounded from a war damaged urban area.
One of a series of oil paintings accompanying the dioramas that depict the scheme of evacuation practiced at the Battle of Messines in Belgium in 1917. Work began on the series in 1923. McCubbin painted the original figures, background and modelling for the dioramas, as well as this series of paintings.
