Description

This folder contains 54 letters received by Birdwood from men and women of various military and civilian positions between 1 June and 25 December 1916. Some of the correspondents include Field Marshal Douglas Haig, Edward George Villiers Stanley (Earl of Derby), Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Michael de Robeck, Paul Thuillier-Buridard (Mayor of Vignacourt), and General Ian Standish Monteith Hamilton. This file also includes several letters from Australian women wanting to know about their sons, or sending gifts such as four-leaf clovers and scarves. There are also letters from soldiers who served under Birdwood, written in response to the congratulatory letters he sent them when they received an award.
