Description

Collection of papers relating to Field Marshal Lord William Riddell Birdwood, commander of the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War. The papers consist of diaries, correspondence, draft speeches, photographs, scrapbooks, newspaper cuttings, original orders and reports of battles for Gallipoli and Bullecourt. Other material, including a certificate from the Mayor of Hobart, relates to Birdwood's visit to Australia in 1920. Correspondents include Prime Minister William Hughes, Sir Keith Murdoch, Sir George F Pearce, Lord Liverpool, Sir James Allen, Sir Ronald Munro-Ferguson, Sir Maurice Hankey, Sir George Arthur, General Sir Ian Hamilton, Charles Bean, Austen Chamberlain and Lady Birdwood.
