Description

An Australian soldier carries corrugated iron sheeting during a working bee at the new village just north of Task Force, Ap Suoi Nghe. One of 477 colour 35mm transparencies taken or collected by 2784336 Signalman Stuart Lindsay Weller, 104 Signal Squadron, relating to his service in Vietnam between 1967 and 1968. Weller writes of the picture: "We Australians created a village just to the north of the Task Force base by relocating all the remotely located population of Phuoc Tuy into a village we could then keep an eye on. It was named Ap Soui Nghe but because it was created fairly quickly – by bulldozing a section of jungle – and the 'houses' were built somewhere else and dropped on site, Australians always referred to it as Ap Soui Nescafe – in recognition of its instant nature. 104 Signal Squadron (and almost all other units at Nui Dat) were tasked by the Brigadier to help improve several of the 'houses' each. To do this we were expected to 'salvage' materials from wherever we could. 57075 Lieutenant Michael JOhn George even volunteered to be the unit's 'salvage officer' and several big trips were made to the big US supply depot behind the air base at Vung Tau to 'salvage' material, not only for use in our unit's lines but also at Ap Soui Nghe."
