Letters from Robert James Henderson, January - June 1916
Description
Letters relating to the First World War service of Second Lieutenant Robert James Henderson, 13th Battalion. These letters were written from Henderson to his family between 9 January and 25 June 1916. Having returned to Egypt after the evacuation from Gallipoli, Henderson details the training and drilling in Egypt while the Australian infantry were being reorganised in preparation for their deployment to the Western Front. After travelling to France aboard the troopship Transylvania, he remarks on the beauty of the French countryside. Eventually the 13th Battalion is sent into the line, and Henderson writes of his early experiences on the Western Front, including the awful sights and the artillery. At around this time he is commissioned as an officer, a second lieutenant. This file contains:
