Papers relating to the military career and Second World War service of Lieutenant Colonel George Ernest Ramsay, 2/30th Australian Infantry Battalion, c.1945.
These papers span most of Colonel (Col) Ramsay's military career, particularly covering his experiences commanding 2/30 Battalion in Malaya and Singapore and as a prisoner of the Japanese (when Col Ramsay commanded 2/18 Battalion, and No 1 Battalion "A" Force, also known as "Ramsay" Force). Includes correspondence with wife and son and letters to his wife from the Red Cross and others. Also includes report on prisoner of war conditions (particularly in camps at Changi, Mergui, Tavoy and Tamarkan), letters and newspaper clippings regarding war crimes trials (including letters from Col Ramsay testifying on behalf of Japanese ex guards), nominal rolls, souvenirs of military tattoos and other pre-Second World War activities with 17 Battalion (North Sydney Regiment), copies of lectures and addresses (particularly relating to ANZAC Day), letters from friends on active service at the close of the First World War and various souvenir brochures and invitations. Additional items: six letters written to Ramsay by Bridgaier Sir Frederick Galleghan, covering 1948-1960; 1958 draft of written dedication to Galleghan included in a gift by Ramsay.
