Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of Lt Col John Corbin, Casualty Clearing Stations. Collection consists of three diaries which provide a detailed record of medical activities at Gallipoli from April to September 1915 and the Western Front (France) from May 1916 to April 1917. The Gallipoli diary contains information about the fighting, the number of wounded treated each day, the types of wounds and how they were treated. The diaries provide considerable criticism of the way the Royal Army Medical Corps and the Australian Army Medical Corps worked at Gallipoli. The collection also contains a handwritten letter from Corbin to General Birdwood on the evacuating procedures for the wounded and how these procedures should be changed; plus loose diary pages and other notes. A typed copy of the Gallipoli diary is held in the Butler papers (AWM41 1/5/18).
