Diary relating to the First World War service of Colonel Rupert Major Downes, Desert Mounted Corps. This diary written between 17 November 1918 and 26 March 1919 are the original pages taken out of a Army carbon copy book. This version is missing the pages for the period 18 February to 26 March 1919.

This diary covers: his work as the Deputy Director of Medical Services of the Desert Mounted Corps listing the people he talks to and the places he visits; His trip to Baalbek and Aleppo before heading to Alexandretta; his thoughts upon passing Turkish solder for the first time after the armistice; the cold wet weather and how it affected the landscape; his return to Egypt; his dealing with Major-Gen Howse; his decision to travel to and the trouble he had being let go; the sport he played and lectures he attended while waiting in Cairo and details of the unrest in and around Cairo and Luxor.
