Description

Letters relating to the First World War service of Captain Ronald Lennox Henderson, Australian Army Medical Corps. The first letter describes the camp at Tel el Kebir and the work done at the hospital there. He describes his visits to Cairo and seeing colleagues from Australia in the camp. The remaining letters are all written in France and Belgium where he served as the Regimental Medical Officer (unit doctor) for the 2nd Australian Infantry Battalion. Henderson expresses strong thoughts about fit men who take extended sick leave or who return to Australia uninjured. He describes the rest billets in France as well as the canteens and shops where the men can buy almost everything they need. In his July letter, Henderson discusses a shrapnel wound he received to his leg and tells his mother not to worry, describing it as it was a minor injury. Describes the Battle of Pozieres and its aftermath. Discusses keeping the ruins of the Cloth Hall at Ypres as a permanent memorial to the war. Mentions the conscription vote.
