Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of correspondence relating to the death of Pilot Officer Martin during an operation while he was serving with 460 Squadron. It contains:
1x Telegram from the Royal Australian Air Force to Pilot Officer Martin’s father, Mr Cecil Martin, South Yarra, Victoria, 28 February 1944. This telegram informs Mr Martin that his son is missing due to air operations over Germany.
1x Letter from the Department of Air to Pilot Officer Martin’s father, Mr Cecil Martin, Melbourne, Victoria, 24 March 1945. This letter informs Mr Martin that his son is presumed dead for official purposes, and extends sympathy.
Pilot Officer Ronald Cecil Martin enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 5 December 1941. He trained as a pilot, and went on to serve with 460 Squadron, based in the United Kingdom. On 25 February 1944, Pilot Officer Martin’s Lancaster aircraft failed to return from an operation targeting Augsberg, Germany. He and his crew were later found to have died in the operation. Pilot Officer Martin is buried at Durnbach War Cemetery, Bayern, Germany.
