Gulbadin Hekmatyar
Description
A poster of Gulbudin Hekmatyar, an Afghan warlord. At the time this poster was made Hekmatyar was the leader of the armed faction the Hezb-i-Isalmi, a group of fundamentalist Sunni Muslim Pashtuns in Afghanistan. Hekmatyar vehemently opposed the presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan, and vowed Hezb-e-Isalmi would fight until an Islamic government was installed. Hekmatyar served as Prime Minister of Afghanistan twice in the 1990s. Australian peacekeepers were involved in de-mining and planning operations in Afghanistan as part of UNMCTT (UN Mine Clearance Training Team) from 1989 to 1993. The translation of the text at the top of the poster reads; ' Engineer Gulbuddin Hekmatyar'.
