< Previous Record | Next Record >Letters relating to the First World War Service of Brigadier General Harold Edward Elliott, 15th Brigade. Some of the letters were censored by Pompey, and later his daughter Violet prior to donation removing details of a personal nature. The letters cover January 1918 - May 1918 detailing; the knighting of his general; a description of a letter from his son which asks him not to be killed or die or get sick; his acknowledgement of his fate and desire to face it with courage; one of his men being sent back to Australia as he was getting a bit 'queer' in the head; his growing indifference; being fired at by what appeared to be British guns and rumours that the Russian government sold them to the Germans; the turbulent relationship he had with General Birdwood; German propaganda leaflets which were dropped on them from a hot air balloon; his brother Geordie's debt; an attack by the Germans which killed many Australians and recaptured Bullecourt; his mens bravery; the possibility of fighting on the site where his brother Geordie is burried; the disbandment of battalions; a shell bursting outside their chateau blowing in all the windows and throwing glass everywhere; an opportunity Pompey had to be promoted to Major General however Birdwood would not pass him over leading to someone else getting the role.
