< Previous Record | Next Record >Letters relating to the First World War service of Brigadier General Harold Edward Elliott, 15th Brigade. Some of the letters were censored by Pompey, and later his daughter Violet prior to donation removing details of a personal nature. The letters cover May 1917 - December 1917 detailing; his narrow escapes; a photographer capturing he and his men with the intention of exhibiting the photographs; the search for training place free from crops; the movement of his major to the 3rd division and the feelings he had as a result causing him to contemplate resigning; being assigned a new captain who he likes but is not experienced; the withdrawal of the Russians from the war and his subsequent fear that the war will never end; the weather being so awful that the lightening was starting fires and a tale of he and his men rescuing two pigs; the death of his brother Geordie during the battle of Polygon Wood and the victory of the fight in general; the expectation they will be able to claim a range of hills they have been fighting for; missing Major Wiecks and his valuable foresight; the arrival of thousands of German troops; his men receiving military crosses and medals; the death of 'Jack' and his grief; the blisters on his face from being constantly gassed; his managerial tactics for the new captain through doing all the thinking and assigning him to the recurring orders; night patrolling in the freezing cold; General Birdwood offering him 6 months leave to return home to his family and his temptation to accept however his opposition due to the lack of assurance that he would be able to return to his position once his leave was over; the sight of French boys sledding down the snow on the hills; his Christmas plans; his disappointment inthe failure of the conscription referendum in Australia; his boys losing heart for the fight; his reflection on the year attributing it to the most sadness and disappointment he's ever experienced.
