Description
Letters relating to the First World War service of Brigadier General Harold Edward Elliott, 15th Brigade. Some of the letters were censored by Pompey, and later his daughter Violet prior to donation removing details of a personal nature. The letters cover November 1918 - February 1919 detailing; the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm; driving the Germans out of France and Belgium; his excitement to return home to his wife; his wishes that his wife Catherine would come over to Europe to meet him; the movement north unsure if they were going to cross into Germany; the return to Australia of men who enlisted in 1915; nearing the Belgium frontier; the Prince of Wales come to visit the Australian troops; his acknowledgement that it will still be a long time before he is able to return to Australia; his disdain towards General Birdwood saying he is full of 'pretended affability'; his gratitude for the end of the war; his homesickness; going before the King at Buckingham Palace to recieve decoration.
