Letters from William McKenzie to his Family, 1916
Description
Letters relating to the First World War service of Chaplain William McKenzie, 4th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. In the beginning of 1916, McKenzie was in Egypt, and his letters contain details of his life and work there, such as holding large parades, concerts and meetings, and finding information about wounded and missing soldiers to send to their families.
McKenzie then travelled to France with his battalion in March 1916, and McKenzie wrote home about his experiences there. Some of these included large concerts and meetings, strict censorship and inconsistent mail, the constant sound of guns, burying the dead (who were often blown into pieces), abiding in very wet, cold, muddy trenches, illness, and leave in England.
