Letters from William McKenzie to his Family, 1917
Description
Letters relating to the First World War service of Chaplain William McKenzie, 4th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. In his 1917 letters to his family, McKenzie writes about his experiences as a chaplain serving in France, including close encounters with shells, burying the dead, holding meetings and concerts, establishing a brass band, and running canteens. He also shares that he had grown very war-weary. In late 1917, it was decided that he would return to Australia, and his final letters in this collection were written as he waited in London to travel home.
