Description

Letters relating to the Second World War service of 318689 Flying Officer Edward Lloyd Fleming, 550 Squadron. In his letters to his family dated between January and June 1945, Fleming shares his experiences as a pilot in training in the Royal Australian Air Force. Some of these experiences include flying in extremely cold conditions, seeing the northern lights from the air, shovelling heavy snow off a runway, seeing a helicopter for the first time, and having difficulties with a member of his crew, who was a heavy drinker. Fleming also shares details of his time on leave, including travelling and sightseeing at various locations in England, Scotland and Ireland, being in London for Victory in Europe Day, and attending dances and the picture theatre. In his letters, Fleming also responds to family news and expresses thoughts about his career after the war.
