Description
Letters relating to the Second World War service of VX25593 Warrant Officer Class 2 David Francis Smith, 8 Division Signals.
In his letters to his wife Estella Irene Smith written between 21 January and 23 June 1941, David writes about his experiences of serving in the Second Australian Imperial Force. He mentions training at Bathurst, embarkation, arrival in Malaya, irregular mail, occasional nights out, seeing a local festival, seeing films at the picture theatre, a trip to the seaside, and playing sports such as soccer, Australian rules football, rugby, and cricket. He also frequently responds to news from home. Several letters in this collection are missing pages, possibly due to wartime censorship.
David Francis Smith became a prisoner of war of the Japanese in February 1942, and died of illness on 25 August 1943.
