Smith, David Francis (Warrant Officer Class 2, d.1943)
A collection of papers, mainly letters, relating to Smith's war service. The collection includes 30 letters written by Smith to his wife Rene, dating from 1940 to early 1942. The letters detail being in camp in Bathurst, his trip to Malaya, missing his wife and parents, questioning whether his decision to enlist was the right one, the monotony of life in Malaya before the Japanese attacked, and the large amount of sport the soldiers played. The collection also includes letters written to Mrs Smith in 1945 from Lt Col Kappe and other members of Smith's unit offering their condolences, the telegram from the Ministery of Army on 9 August 1944 stating that Smith had died of illness while a POW on 25 August 1943, letters regarding Smith's grave, a memorial scroll, a 'Call to Arms' letter, letters of reference for Smith from 1928 and part of a 1922 school exercise book.
