Description

Diary relating to the Second World War service of WX3453 Captain Avon Reah Smith-Ryan, 2/4 Australian Machine Gun Battalion.

This collection consists of an unbound, unofficial war diary in which Smith-Ryan gives an account of the daily movements of 2/4 Machine Gun Battalion from 30 January until the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942. Other items include a small notebook containing casuality lists, nominal rolls and movements of prisoners of war at Changi from 1942 to 1945, an unsigned escape agreement, and a nominal roll for 2/4 Machine Gun Battalion personnel at Changi in May 1945.
