Description

Papers of Maude Elizabeth Edmondson relating to the life and Second World War service of NX15705 Corporal John Hurst "Jack" Edmondson, 2/17 Battalion, Australia and Libya, 1916-1956.

Wallet 1 of 4 contains four folders.

Folder 2 of 4 contains the second of two diaries kept by Corporal John Hurst “Jack” Edmondson’s mother, Maude Elizabeth Edmondson. This diary comprises a brief introduction stating the purpose of the diary, and contains a few brief entries that relate to events that took place between 3 September 1939 and 19 October 1940. In the first entry, Maude recalls listening to Prime Minister Menzies’ special announcement regarding England’s declaration of war, Jack’s support for compulsory service, and his departure with 4th Battalion for Merrylands and then Barrenjoey Lighthouse for coast guard duty. Subsequent entries mention Jack’s transfer to the Australian Army and entry to Ingleburn Army Camp, illness and embarkation.

Collection also contains full transcriptions and extracts of condolence letters from family, friends and members of the Australian Army who served with Jack. Some of the original letters may be found in Wallet 2 of 4.
