Description

Papers of Maude Elizabeth Edmondson relating to the life and Second World War service of NX15705 Corporal John Hurst "Jack" Edmondson, 2/17 Battalion, Australia and Libya, 1916-1956.

This collection consists of the papers of Corporal Jack Edmondson's mother, Maude Elizabeth Edmondson. Collection comprises four wallets including Maude's diaries, condolence letters and telegrams, service papers, booklets from commemorative or memorial services, a book of poetry, an album or scrapbook of newspaper cuttings and other miscellaneous items. Corporal Edmondson was killed in action at Tobruk on 14 April 1941 and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

Wallet 1 of 4 contains four diaries kept by Corporal Jack Edmondson's mother, Maude Elizabeth Edmondson. The first diary contains regular, detailed entries dated between 8 January 1940 and 27 June 1942. The second diary contains later entires in which Maude recalls Prime Minister Menzies' on 3 September 1939, her son's support for conscription and transfer to the Australian Army, training, and embarkation. This wallet also contains an undated, handwritten account of Jack's life at "Forest Home" farm from birth to twelve years old, a few brief anecdotes of life on the home front, and extracts of Jack's school work.
