Description

Papers of Maude Elizabeth Edmondson relating to the life and Second World War service of NX15705 Corporal John Hurst "Jack" Edmondson, 2/17 Battalion, Australia and Libya, 1916-1956.

Wallet 1 of 4 contains four folders.

Folder 3 of 4 consists of an undated, handwritten account of the first twelve years of Jack Edmondson’s life at “Forest Home”, a farm near Liverpool. The account was written by his mother, Maude Elizabeth Edmondson, and in it she recalls the day of Jack’s birth, his home schooling, and transfer to Austral Public School at eight years of age. Jack completed his schooling at Hurlstone Agricultural High School at Glenfield. Collection also contains an undated two-page history of Maude Elizabeth Edmondson’s family, the Hurst’s that was written by Dariel Larkins (nee Havard).

Corporal John Hurst “Jack” Edmondson was killed in action on 14 April 1941 at Tobruk and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in repelling an enemy attack and saving the life of his Commanding Officer.
