Atherton, Lawrence "Snowy" MM, (Private, b.1896 - d.1980)
Description
A collection consisting of 2 diaries, newspaper clippings, a postcards and a photograph. The diaries detail Pte Atherton's training in Egypt, the journey to France, the fighting, being shot at whilst carrying stretchers, the troops going over the top and the resulting thousands of wounded men, the constant noise of the guns, dead bodies laying everywhere, the superiority of the German trenches, being constantly shelled with gas shells, and the results of football games between the Field Ambulance units.
