Description

Album of 54 pages including covers, containing 246 fixed items of a mixed nature (photographs, documents, badge, colour patch, letters, newspaper clippings) and 20 loose items, related to the service of 3395 Captain Jeffrey James Shelton MC. The album was compiled by Shelton's father John Victor Shelton (a First World War veteran) to document his son's service in Korea. The album includes photographs taken by Captain Shelton, as well as many official photographs, often accompanied by their printed captions or clippings of newspaper articles that reproduce the photographs. Topics covered by the photographs include: army life in Korea, citation parade, an image showing "air napalm", pintail pontoons, snow recreation on leave, shelling, flight in a 'recce' plane, leisure activities and landscapes of 'the Vallery of the October Stunt' dated October 1952 (Hill 227 and Hill 355). Letters from Captain Shelton to his family describing military actions and movements in some detail have been excerpted at length and retyped and folder in envelopes fixed to the pages of the album. Other documents included in the album include safe conduct passes, stamps, telegram, patrol reports, 'interrogation highlights' report, INTREP reports from April 1952 classified as 'secret'. Many members of 3RAR are identified by name including: Jack McCormack, Alex Preece, Pete Scott, Fred Gardner, Mick Moore, Jack Gerki, Bill Keys, Jim Everly, Mick Dent, Driver Darky Poynton [possibly 32554 Keith Robert Pointon], and many others. Named places include Imjin, Jive Ridge and Kimpo Airfield. Many items are pinned in, including to the interleaved tissue pages. Loose items include 15 documents: letter of promotion, menu, guidance re wearing of medals, travel and flight information, paper currency, newspaper clippings, a plastic coffee packs; and 5 photographs.
