History / Summary

Lieutenant George Box Carter, enlisted on 2 September 1914 and returned to Australian on 18 July 1919. He served with 4 Pioneer Battalion, AIF. Carter was awarded the Military Cross for actions between 22 September 1917 and 24 February 1918. The recommendation for the award reads, 'For unfailing and enthusiastic devotion to duty during the period 22/9/17 to 24/2/18. This officer has done exceptionally good work with his platoon, improving their morale by his personal coolness and courage under the most trying circumstances; especially during the latter part of September and October, 1917, when he was working on forward roads in the neighborhood of ZONNEBEKE, the whole of which works were carried out under continuous and harassing enemy fire. Lieu. CARTER showed out conspicuously among the platoon commanders in the way he handled his men, and the successful completion of the works was greatly due to his gallant conduct under most trying circumstances. Period covered - 22/9/17 to 24/2/18 ". Also recommended for an award during the Gallipoli campaign (not awarded) while serving with 10 Battalion, AIF, as 966 Pte CARTER G B in conjunction with 444 PTE Sharp F, 931 L/Corp Tritton R A and 9 Pte Spry G W. Recommendation reads, 'For consistent good work as Battalion observer, in watching enemy works near ANZAC and movements in Southern Zone during last 3 months'. (Recommendation is hand written).
