History / Summary
2840 Private Herbert John Ellis served during the South African War as a member of D Company, Australian Commonwealth Horse (WA). On 19 August 1914, aged 32, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and embarked for overseas service with A Squadron, 3 Light Horse Regiment aboard HMAT Port Lincoln in October. He died of enteric and pneumonia in Alexandria on 7 August 1915 after being evacuated from Gallipoli. He was the eldest son of Arthur and Margaret Ellis of Rosewater, SA. His two younger brothers were killed in action during the war.
