Portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Lawrence Dominic McCarthy VC, 16th Battalion. Lt McCarthy was awarded the Victoria Cross for "most conspicuous bravery, initiative and leadership" on 23 August 1918 near Madam Wood, France. During the attack near Madam Wood, Lt McCarthy's battalion was heavily opposed, Lt McCarthy ran to the nearest enemy post, single handedly capturing the gun. He continued his way down the trench, inflicting heavy casualties and capturing three more machine guns. He returned to Australia on 20 December 1919, and his AIF appointment ended on 6 August 1920. Lt McCarthy was also awarded the Croix de Guerre.
