Description

The 9th Field Company of Australian engineers constructing a dugout for 9th Infantry Brigade Headquarters. The next day, from this point, the operations of the Brigade were directed in the attack on Bray and Happy Valley to the left of it. Identified, left to right: Sapper (Spr) J. Cartledge; Sergeant W. E. Donnelly; Spr E. Gaudzinski (foreground); Spr C. Grew (barechested on top of dugout); Corporal H. Mitchell (sitting on front of dugout); 9876 Second Corporal Reginald James T. Gay (standing beside doorway of dugout). The other men are unidentified.
