Sweetheart badge : Sister D S White, Australian Army Nursing Service
Sweethearts gold-plated metal and enamel badge in the form of a gold SMLE rifle with fixed bayonet. Superimposed on the rifle between the magazine and foresight is a representation of the Rising Sun badge in gold, with red enamel around the crown and blue enamel in the scroll.
Associated with Sister Dorothy Sevilla White, Australian Army Nursing Service, born Sydney, NSW on 20 January 1892. White had five years nursing experience before enlisting as a Staff Nurse on 12 July 1917. She embarked for overseas service in 'Wiltshire' on 30 August 1917. Sister White served with 19 (Alexandria), 42, 50 and 52 (Salonika) British General Hospitals and suffered malaria and influenza during her 18 months in Egypt and Greece. She returned to England on leave in late February, joining 3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital for two months before enrolling in a Domestic Economics and Cook course in London for 8 weeks. She was promoted to Sister 30 August 1919 and returned to Australia in 'Osterley' on 6 November 1919. Her appointment in the AIF terminated on 15 April 1920.
