Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of Sister Dorothy Sevilla White, Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS). Sister White enlisted as a Staff Nurse on 12 July 1917 and embarked on the HMAT Wiltshire A18, from Sydney on 31 August 1917. She was promoted to Sister on 30 August 1919, and returned to Australia on the RMS Osterley on 6 November 1919. Collection comprises several service papers - her statement of Service in the Australian Imperial Force, her Certificate of Appointment in the AANS with a record of service on the verso, and a letter from the Repatriation Department in 1972 regarding her pension. Also contained in this collection are personal papers - an embroidered postcard with notation on the back from 'Norm S White, "Somewhere", 13/10/17' (believed to be from elder brother 33315 Norman Studwick White), three postcards written by Doff (Dorothy White) to her younger sister Frances White, an eight page handwritten letter in England and dated 6 May 1923 from 'Your affectionate cousin, Servi Capham" (assumed to have been written to Dorothy White), a black and white studio photograph of her distant English cousin killed at Villers Bretonneux in April 1918 (death mentioned in the letter from cousin Servi Capham), and an illustrated card for Christmas 1917, sent to Miss F White, from Clive C Smith. Dorothy's youngest brother, VX39892 Sergeant Robert Gordon White, served during the Second World War and a collection of his letters to the family are held in Private Records collection PR01548.
