Description

Finely worked gilt and enamel patriotic badge with the five petalled rose of England picked out on a blue background. A centrally positioned red, white and blue enamelled Union Jack has a small gilt bulldog attached to it with lugs. The voided petals contain a King's crown, a kangaroo, a beaver, an elephant and an ostrich representing the four dominions of the Commonwealth. The edges are enamelled in blue with gold lettering, 'A UNITED EMPIRE WHAT WE HAVE WE'LL HOLD'. The reverse is embossed with 'SYMBOL OF EMPIRE', 'REGD. NO.643272'and maker's mark, 'WHITE LTD MANCHESTER'. A gilt metal pin fitting is set into the back of the badge.

History / Summary

Born in 1892, Sister Dorothy Sevilla White enlisted as a Staff Nurse with the Australian Army Nursing Service on 12 July 1917. Embarking for overseas service on the 'Wiltshire' on 30 August 1917 she served in Alexandria and Salonika with the Australian Army Medical Corps Reinforcements. Promoted Sister on 30 August 1919, White returned to Australia on the 'Osterley' on 6 November 1919. Her appointment in the AIF was terminated on 15 April 1920.
