2/5665 Private (Pte) John Pickett, of Ingleburn, NSW, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR), with ‘Rinty', a war dog with 2RAR. 'Rinty' and Pte Pickett are one of eight teams operating in the jungle covered hills and swamps in the Sungei Siput district. 'Rinty' and the other dogs are the eyes and ears of the patrols and many an ambush has been 'smelt' out by the dogs. Recently Pte Pickett and 'Rinty' competed in the Malayan war dog field trials against chosen teams from all units, and added further lustre to 2RAR with a well earned 2nd place. 'Rinty', a black and tan Alsatian, was purchased in Melbourne in June 1955 and trained at Casula, NSW as a war dog, and came to Malaya with the main body of the troops in October 1955. Pte Pickett said that 'Rinty' has done over 20 hard jungle patrols and is a firm favourite with the men. Pte Pickett also served in Korea with 2RAR from 1953-1954.
