Studio portrait of 723 Lance Sergeant Frank J Olle, 5th Battalion from Penshurst, Victoria. A 27 year old school teacher prior to enlisting on 18 August 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Corporal with D Company from Melbourne on 21 October 1914 aboard HMAT Orvieto. He was promoted to Lance Sergeant on 1 December 1914 and was then wounded in action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. After being evacuated to hospital at Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt, he died of wounds there on 31 May 1915 and was buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery.
