Chapman, John Joseph (Lieutenant, b.1889 - d.1965)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant John Joseph Chapman, 9th Infantry Battalion, Gallipoli, Ireland and France, 1915-1916. Collection consists of copies of extracts from a diary kept by Chapman while on active service at Gallipoli between March-June 1915 and while on duty in Ireland, April-May 1916. Location of originals unknown.
The 1915 diary covers his time at Gallipoli, the difficulties of providing water on the Peninsula, casualties suffered, and artillery actions of the Turks.
The 1916 diary covers his duties in Ireland in April 1916 and at Mouquet Farm in August 1916. It also describe his gradual recuperation from a leg wound suffered on 24 August 1916 until release to England in December 1916.
