Elder, Howard Thomas (Lieutenant, b.? - d.1915)
Description
Collection relating to the service of Lieutenant Howard Thomas Elder, 5 Battalion, Egypt and Gallipoli, 1914-1915. Collection includes a typescript copy of a diary kept by Elder and notes of signalling operations. Diary was copied by family members and presented to the Australian War Memorial in 1928. Location of original unknown.
History / Summary
Biographical note: Served with the 5th Battalion, AIF. Elder died at sea 9 May 1915 of wounds received the previous day at the Second Battle of Krithia. Salesman of Hawksburn, VIC, born Melbourne, 15 July 1891; joined AIF 28 August 1914 as Second Lieutenant; embarked from Australia on the Orvieto, 21 October 1914; promoted Lieutenant, 1 February 1915.
