Adams, Arthur James (Private, b.1888 - d.1916)
Collection relating to the First World War service of 78 Private Arthur James Adams, 13 Field Ambulance, Gallipoli and France, 1915-1916. Collection consists of a handwritten diary covering the period 1 January 1915 until Adams' wounding at Pozieres, 8 August 1916 (he died of wounds 9 August 1916). The diary includes regular detailed entries covering conditions and routine tasks of Field Ambulance under enemy fire. Entries for 9 May 1915 and 19 May 1915 mention Jack Simpson and his donkey. The diary also mentions weather details, leave activities and names a number of wounded soldiers and their injuries.
Biographical note: Private Arthur James Adams, 13 Field Ambulance, AIF, who on 9 August died of wounds received a few days earlier in the Battle of Pozieres. Other biographical details concerning him are:- Carpenter and joiner, of Brisbane, Queensland, born Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, England, age at time of death 28, arrived in Australia when 22 years old; educated at the Wolverton County School, and had been a student at the Science and Arts Institute in that town; had served in the 1st Bucks Territorials for about 3 years.
