Description
Collection relating to service of 593 Sergeant Richard Gardiner, 7 Battalion, AIF, Gallipoli, 1915. Collection consists of a letter written by Gardiner to his father in which he describes activities of 7 Battalion at Gallipoli, Lone Pine, and the evacuation of troops from the Peninsula.
History / Summary
This collection provides a detailed and articulate description of its author's experiences on Gallipoli, in particular his involvement in the Battle of Lone Pine. Gardiner gives his father a realistic picture of his situation, with no attempt to romanticise the conditions in which he finds himself. The collection reflects Gardiner's national pride and his pragmatic commitment to duty, together with his antipathy to the war itself.
