Sergeant Richard Job Gardiner
Description
Richard Job Gardiner was born in Carlton, Victoria. Prior to the First World War he was a blacksmith's striker. On 18 August 1914, Gardiner enlisted with the 7th Infantry Battalion at Footscray, Victoria. He was 20 years old. Gardiner embarked on the HMAT Hororata at Melbourne on 19 October 1914 and disembarked at Alexandria on 5 April 1915. He was wounded in action on three separate occasions. The first time Gardiner was wounded was on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 22 May 1915. The second time was again at Gallipoli, on 8 September 1915 during the battle of Lone Pine. The third time he was wounded was in France on 22 April 1917. Gardiner returned to Australia on 20 October 1918. Richard Gardiner died on 22 March 1982.
