Description

Collection relating to the service of Lieutenant Nevill Montague Little, 5 Light Horse Regiment and 49 Battalion, Australia, Egypt, Gallipoli, France, 1914-1916. Collection consists of 73 letters written by Lieutenant Little, and two of his diaries (1915 & 1916) which contain brief daily entries. Collection also contains eight letters written by 2140 Private James Stevenson Grant, 15 Battalion, to Lieutenant Little's mother, from 1916 to 1919.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Lieutenant Nevill Montague Little, 49 Battalion AIF, who on 3 September 1916 was killed in action during an attack upon Mouquet Farm (Pozieres). Other biographical details concerning him are: pastoral student; of Blackall, Qld, born Toowoomba, Qld; educated at Brisbane Boys' College, served for a time in the CMF Artillery and the naval cadets; enlisted from Central Queensland in the AIF in October 1914 and was accepted as a trooper in the 5 Light Horse Regiment; landed at Anzac on 20 May 1915, was wounded in July, returned to the Peninsula in August, and was later invalided to Egypt with enteric; was given a commission in the 49th Infantry Battalion in February 1916, and went to France in June; age at time of death 23 years 11 months.
