Bailey, Herbert Austin (Sapper, b.1873 - d.1963)
Collection relating to the First World War service of 19636 Sapper Herbert Austin Bailey, 5th Australian Division Engineers. Collection consists of two diaries (one very brief) and six separate diary type entries (some are incomplete) which appear to have been sent home as letters. In all they cover the trip from Australia to England, his experiences in France, and eventual return to Australia. In France he describes bombardments and gas, general carnage and destruction. There are references to Americans and Canadians. Bailey also describes aerial battles, German trenches and tunnelling and makes references to souvenirs and proposed war museums in Australia. Places mentioned include Amiens, Caix, Peronne, Bellicourt, Somme and the Hindenburg Line. Some supplementary material is also included in the collection.
