Description

Collection relating to the service of 3484 Sergeant William Terry Turner, 56 Battalion (and formerly of 45 Battalion), AIF, at sea, Western Front, England, 1917-1919. Collection consists of 116 letters written by Turner between January 1917 and August 1919; two diaries kept by Turner from November 1917 to March 1918; a typescript copy of these diaries; a handwritten memoir compiled by Turner in response to a request from the Australian War Memorial. The letters mainly relate to family matters, and contain very little information of military history interest, but do contain considerable family detail, especially when Turner writes of his visits to England, and particularly to the city of York. The diaries and the memoir are far more detailed in relation to military matters.
